Search this question, and you’ll find a single number: “25 to 35 years.” That’s a reasonable range for a properly installed driveway. But stated on its own, without explaining what “properly installed” actually means, it’s not much use to you. Two driveways built with the same pavers, in the same suburb, can differ by fifteen years or more because of one thing that has nothing to do with which paver you chose.

Typical Lifespan by Material
With a properly compacted base underneath, the qualifier that matters more than the number itself, more on that below — here’s what each material typically delivers:
■Clay brick pavers: commonly 25–35 years. Clay brick doesn’t fade the way concrete does, so a clay brick driveway at year 25 often still looks close to how it did at year one, even if individual pavers have needed the occasional reset.
■Interlocking concrete pavers: commonly 20–30 years. Slightly shorter than clay brick mainly because concrete pavers can fade or chalk with UV exposure over decades, though the structural lifespan (the base holding up) is comparable.
■Cobble (cropped granite or concrete cobble): commonly 25–35 years, often longer for natural stone cobble, which is close to as durable as a driveway surface gets.
Notice these ranges overlap heavily. The material you choose matters for cost, colour retention, and style, not nearly as much for raw lifespan as most guides imply.
The #1 Factor That Actually Determines Lifespan
Here’s what a bare “25 to 35 years” answer leaves out: that number assumes the base underneath was done properly. If it wasn’t, none of the material lifespans above applies. A driveway on a poorly compacted base can start failing within five years, regardless of whether the pavers on top were clay brick or the cheapest interlocking concrete available.
The paver is the part you can see and choose. The base is the part that actually decides how long any of it lasts.
A driveway carries real, repeated weight. A loaded vehicle rolls over the same few square metres daily, plus the turning force of the wheels as a car reverses in and out. That load is held by the compacted stone base underneath the pavers, not by the pavers themselves. If that base isn’t excavated to the right depth and properly compacted before installation, the ground beneath will settle unevenly, and the surface follows it down regardless of how good the material on top is.
This is also why two driveways with identical pavers can age so differently. The paver is the part you can see and choose. The base is the part that actually decides how long any of it lasts.

Signs Your Driveway Needs Attention
Catching problems early is far cheaper than letting them run. Watch for:
■Sunken sections or visible dips, especially in the wheel tracks — the clearest sign of a settling base underneath.
■Pavers that rock or shift underfoot rather than sitting flush and stable.
■Joint sand washing out repeatedly after rain, leaving visible gaps between pavers.
■Weeds establishing in multiple joints, not just one or two — often a sign the base has settled enough to open gaps where water and seeds can get in.
■Pooling water on the surface after rain rather than draining away, which points to a drainage or fall problem rather than the pavers themselves.
None of these means the whole driveway needs replacing. Caught early, each of these is a contained, relatively small repair; left for years, they compound into a much bigger job.
How Proper Installation Extends Life
Since the base is what actually determines lifespan, the installation process is where that lifespan gets decided well before the first paver is visible. Correct excavation depth, a properly compacted sub-base, the right bedding sand, and a laying pattern suited to the load (herringbone for anything carrying vehicles) are what separate a driveway that hits 30 years from one that needs attention at year eight.

■Sealing periodically, particularly for clay brick and cobble, to help resist staining and make cleaning easier.
■Clearing weeds and moss early, before roots have a chance to lift pavers or widen joints.
■Addressing a sunken section immediately rather than waiting — a small settled area only gets larger and more expensive the longer it’s left.
None of this is a full re-lay. It’s the kind of upkeep that, done consistently, is what actually pushes a driveway toward the top end of its material’s range rather than the bottom.
