If the ground underneath isn’t excavated to the right depth and properly compacted before a single paver goes down, the surface will settle unevenly within a few seasons, no matter how good the pavers themselves are. Fixing that later means lifting the paving, redoing the base properly, and relaying, which costs more than doing it right the first time.
Two trade standards worth knowing before you compare quotes: driveway pavers should be at least 60mm thick (thinner 50mm pavers are fine for a garden path, not a surface carrying vehicles), and they should be laid in a herringbone pattern, which interlocks against the turning force of wheels far better than a straight running-bond layout.
