Pool Paving in Cape Town
Why Pool Paving Goes Wrong
Pool paving takes more punishment than any other paving at your home. It gets wet all the time, it bakes in the summer sun, and it sits on soil that was dug up when the pool was built.
When it’s not laid right, you see it fast:
✓Pavers sink or tilt next to the pool
✓Water sits in puddles instead of running off
✓The surface is slippery when wet
✓Joints wash out and weeds push through
✓Dark pavers get too hot to walk on
Most of these problems start under the paving, not with the pavers themselves.

Our Pool Paving Services
Paving Around a New Pool
The soil around a new pool is loose. It was dug out and filled back in. If it’s paved straight away without proper compaction, the paving can sink. We compact the ground properly first, then lay paving that stays level.
Re-Laying an Old Pool Surround
If your pool paving has sunk, lifted from tree roots, or come loose, we lift it, fix the base underneath, and re-lay it. We’ll tell you if your old pavers can be reused.
How We Pave Around a Pool
Good pool paving is mostly about what you can’t see. Here’s what matters:
Solid Ground First
We compact the base in thin layers. Near the pool we work carefully, so the pool shell isn’t damaged.
Water Runs Away From the Pool
We slope the paving slightly away from the pool. You won’t notice it, but rain and splash water drain off instead of pooling.
The Right Height Next to Your Coping
Coping is the row of edge stones on the rim of your pool. We lay the paving at the right level next to it, so water doesn’t run back into the pool. If your coping is cracked or loose, we’ll tell you at the site visit so it can be fixed before new paving goes down.
Joints That Stay in Place
Plain sand washes out of joints next to a pool. The joints around a pool need a material that’s made for wet areas.
Choosing Pavers for Your Pool Area
Pick a paver with a textured, non-slip finish. Smooth or polished surfaces get slippery when wet.
Colour matters in Cape Town’s summer. Light colours like ivory and sandstone stay cooler underfoot. Charcoal looks sharp but gets much hotter.
Popular choices around pools:
✓Concrete pavers – good value, many colours and textures
✓Large-format slabs – fewer joints, clean and modern
✓Exposed aggregate – very grippy, with a natural stone look
✓Clay brick and cobbles – a classic look that suits older homes
Have a salt pool? Salt water can damage paving over time. Plan to have the paving sealed, and resealed from time to time.

What Affects the Cost of Pool Paving?
Every pool area is different, so we don’t give one price for all of them. These are the things that change the cost:
✓Size – how many square metres need paving
✓Paver choice – concrete, large-format, aggregate or clay
✓Ground work – new pools need more compaction; old surrounds may need lifting first
✓Removing old paving – if it has to come out and go away
✓Cuts and pattern – curved pools and detailed patterns take more cutting
✓Access – how easily materials can reach your back garden
You usually get a cost estimate on the same day as your free site visit.
