HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST
PAVING CONTRACTOR ON REDDIT

Reddit threads are harder to fake than star ratings; here’s how to actually use them to vet a paving contractor, and what to watch out for.

Google reviews can be bought. Reddit threads are harder to fake, which is why more homeowners now check Reddit before trusting a star rating. If you’re about to spend a few thousand rand on a driveway or patio, here’s how to actually use Reddit to find someone good and avoid someone bad.

Why People Trust Reddit Over Review Sites

On a review site, a business can ask happy customers to leave a rating and quietly ignore the rest. On Reddit, nobody’s watching. People post because something went right or wrong, not because they were asked to.

A five-line Reddit comment often carries more weight than fifty five-star reviews.

Where to Look

Start with your city or country’s own subreddit; r/CapeTown and r/southafrica are both active, and “who did your driveway” is a common post on both. From there, check general home subreddits like r/HomeImprovement, r/Renovations, and r/Construction. Search the subreddit directly (Reddit’s search bar, not Google) using terms like “paving contractor,” “driveway paver,” or “patio installer.” Sort by “Top” and set the time filter to “All Time”. This surfaces the threads with the most real replies, not just the newest ones.

How to Spot a Real Recommendation

Not every glowing comment is genuine. A few checks help:

✓Look at the account’s history. A brand-new account that only ever posts about one company is a red flag. Real users have a normal mix of posts across other topics.

✓Read the replies, not just the top comment. A good recommendation usually gets a reply asking “did they turn up on time?” or “what did it cost?” — and a real answer.

✓Be wary of comments that read like an advert. Genuine recommendations are short and specific (“they fixed a drainage problem the last guy missed”). Fake ones tend to be vague and overly positive.

✓Check for repeated warnings. If three different threads over two years mention the same company avoiding calls after a deposit, that’s not a coincidence.

Questions Worth Asking in the Thread Itself

Don’t just read; ask. Post your own question with your suburb, budget range, and the type of paving job (driveway, patio, pool surround). Reddit users are usually happy to name names in a reply, even if they won’t in public on a review site.

Red Flags Reddit Users Warn About Most Often

The same complaints come up again and again: contractors who want full payment upfront, no written quote, vague answers about how long the job will take, and no clear guarantee on the work. If a contractor can’t answer a basic question about their warranty in writing, that’s worth noting before you sign anything.

Reddit is a great first step, but it can’t replace seeing real, local work. If you’re in Cape Town, our paving contractor page shows real project photos, pricing factors, and our 5-year workmanship warranty in writing the same details a good Reddit thread would tell you to check for.
